PALCUS (palcus.org), in collaboration with the U.S. Census Bureau and with the support of the Ambassador of Portugal to the U.S., has launched the Make Portuguese Count™ Campaign. The goal of this national campaign is to encourage the participation of Portuguese and Portuguese Americans in the 2020 Census and have them enter “Portuguese” under the “Race/Origins” question. The census counts every person residing in the United States in 2020 regardless of citizenship status. This is the best chance since the 2000 Census to capture a complete count of residents living in the U.S. who claim Portuguese ancestry regardless of their own arrival time in the U.S. or that of their ancestors. There are many reasons to properly account for all people identifying as Portuguese origin, for example, so that communities can receive their fair share of the more than $675 billion per year in federal funds spent on schools, hospitals, roads, public works and other vital programs.
